Maude Irving (Tait) Moriarty was the first licensed female pilot in Massachusetts and Connecticut to fly solo. She set numerous flying records throughout her career.
Born in Chicopee in 1898 to James and Mary Tait and educated in Springfield, she was a graduate of the MacDuffie School for Girls and worked as an elementary school teacher, first in Hampden, and then in East Longmeadow.
In 1928 she took a leave of absence from teaching to realize her dream of flying. She was no doubt inspired by the activities of her father and his brothers, who sold their dairy business and purchased a plot of land on which they built the Springfield Airport. Now that location is the Springfield Plaza off of St. James Avenue.
